If you’re curious why Chardonnay from the Jura has developed such a rabid following, this is an excellent place to start.
Terre du Lias is Chardonnay from the highly acclaimed Domaine de La Borde based in Pupillin, in Jura. Founded in 2003 by Julien Mareschal, the estate has quickly earned a reputation for exceptional, terroir-driven wines. Major influences Pierre Overnoy and Emmanuel Houillon loom large over his wines, which are electric, precise, and often sublime.
Terre du Lias is made in the less-oxidative, fresher ouillé style (barrels topped up during ageing) and is a masterclass in tension. On the nose there is abundant citrus peel, white peach, ripe apple, salted butter, toasted nuts. The palate is complex with ripe yellow fruit, bruised apple, honey and hazlenut. The finish is strikingly mineral and saline. A layered, confident, and powerful wine - testament to both the producer and region.
