Scarzello's flagship wine. Produced only in top vintages, sourced from the Vigna Merenda parcel in the heart of Sarmassa, one of Barolo’s most prized south–southwest facing sites. The nose opens with sweet cherry, plum and fig, layered with liquorice, dried herbs and subtle balsamic notes. On the palate, the wine is poised and finely structured, showing red berry fruit, tobacco, leather and gentle spice. Tannins are present but well integrated, framed by bright acidity and a long, savoury finish. While firmly "old school" in style, this is also super refined and elegant, and will reward time in the cellar.
Scarzello is a family-run estate based just below the Barolo castle, with roots in the village dating back to 1947. Now led by third-generation winemaker Federico Scarzello, the domaine farms just over four hectares across some of Barolo’s most respected sites, including Sarmassa, Paiagallo and Terlo. Scarzello is firmly traditional in outlook: organic farming, long macerations (sometimes over 50 days), ageing in large Slavonian oak, and focus on terroir expression.
