Sourced from estate vineyards in Terlo and parcels within Sarmassa, this is Scarzello’s village Barolo and a great summary of the commune as a whole. The nose is lifted and precise, with sour cherry, wild strawberry and dried rose petals, layered with liquorice, balsamic and forest floor. On the palate, red fruit and cranberry, cacao nibs, tobacco, mushroom, and leather. Fine grained tannins, superbly balanced, finishing long. This is classic, old school Barolo - approachable now (with a good decant), but will also reward time in the cellar.
Scarzello is a family-run estate based just below the Barolo castle, with roots in the village dating back to 1947. Now led by third-generation winemaker Federico Scarzello, the domaine farms just over four hectares across some of Barolo’s most respected sites, including Sarmassa, Paiagallo and Terlo. Scarzello is firmly traditional in outlook: organic farming, long macerations (sometimes over 50 days), ageing in large Slavonian oak, and strong focus on terroir expression.
