Boscareto is Principiano’s flagship single-vineyard Barolo, bottled only in the best vintages, with this 2020 being the first release since 2016. The vineyard lies in Serralunga d’Alba, at the foot of Cascina Francia, with old vines on south-west facing sandy soils over blue marne.
Serralunga Barolo is typically the most structured and long-lived expression of Nebbiolo, known for firm tannins and extraordinary depth. The 2020 Boscareto shows rose petal, red cherry, macerated raspberry and orange peel, with nutmeg, tobacco and deep mineral notes. It's mid-weight with tremendous polish, silky mouthfeel, bright acidity and a long, fragrant finish. While powerful, it's also very approachable for a Serralunga Barolo.
About the Producer:
Ferdinando Principiano farms on the southern edge of the Barolo zone, working vineyards in Monforte d’Alba and Serralunga, bordered by the wild landscape of the Alta Langhe. The estate spans around 20 hectares, including prized parcels in Ravera and Boscareto, alongside Barbera, Dolcetto and Timorasso.
Principiano converted to organic farming in the early 2000s and now works with biodynamic principles, using copper and sulphur only when necessary and actively encouraging biodiversity in and around the vineyards. In the cellar, the approach is resolutely traditional: native fermentations, long submerged-cap macerations and élevage exclusively in older large-format oak.
