El Tamboril comes from a single, north-facing vineyard in Navatalgordo, at around 1,200 metres and is the highest and coldest site that Comando G work. The vines are old Garnacha planted on sandy, decomposed granite, and the altitude pushes ripening late, often well into October. The result is a serious wine balancing fruit intensity with striking minerality. The nose shows macerated strawberry and pomegranate, woody herbs, and tobacco. Tannin is fine and chalky but firm, with acidity keeping everything taut surprisingly fresh. The wine opens slowly, gaining detail and complexity with time. It's an incredibly precise, fascinating wine that will reward careful cellaring.
Comando G, led by Fernando García and Dani Landi, has quickly become one of the most influential wineries in Spain. Working from their base in Rozas del Puerto Real, they set out to elevate the Sierra de Gredos - a rugged, historic wine region that had largely slipped from view - by focusing on old vineyards, high altitude and granitic soils. Their Garnacha, grown mostly above 900 metres, is farmed biodynamically and shaped by a philosophy that favours terroir about all else. In doing so, García and Landi have helped redefine Garnacha from a rustic variety into something capable of real finesse and depth, earning Comando G a place among the world's most acclaimed and closely-followed producers.
