Kia ora! These are my top 3 wines right now sharing balanced natures alike.
2019 Sato Pinot Gris l’Atypique
The siren of skin-contact wine.
A blessed acidity of rich fruit, accompanied by a dry, subtle rounded finish while keeping your gaze locked onto its vibrant colour. A perfect introduction to orange wine and difficult to deter from. Produced by my favourite delicate winemakers in New Zealand (Central Otago), Yoshiaki and Kyoko Sato.
2020 Jérôme Jouret 'L'Accroche Coeur' Merlot Syrah
Slightly chilling will awaken an energising palate.
Don’t be fooled by its heavy sounding name, as this delightful blend is a lot lighter than you may think. Making it a dangerously drinkable blend from Ardèche, France. Very inviting spices on the nose, juicy and slightly peppery on the palate with an acidity that pairs with the herb finish. This is one of those reds where it doesn’t matter the time or place, it will be refreshingly fun.
2020 Joé Chandellier 'Le Ribieral' Grenache Carignan
You’ll be blown away by this Grenache (70%) and Carignan (30%) blend from Languedoc, France. I’ve been buying a bottle or two a week from this vintage since we’ve had it back…
Black fruits with a hint of strawberry, grown on 20-50 year old bush vines. I’m a lover of Grenache and fairly new to Carignan and this introduction made me fall in love with the acidity that the Carignan brings. Giving, not so intrusive and not too high of an acidity as it trickles off into smooth and slightly grippy tannins that will help you wind down. There is also something about maturing Grenache in aged French barriques. It helps create a well rounded, unobtrusive earthy finish which I absolutely love. I gifted a bottle to a friend and all she kept saying was beautiful.
