If you've been drinking natural wine in New Zealand for a while now, chances are you will have come across Jauma and one of his Chenin Blancs. Blewitt Springs is one of James's favourite vineyards, positioned on the sandy, schisty soils in Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale (South Australia). Here, old dry-grown bush vines of Chenin Blanc have been tended to by hand since the 1940s, and James has made a dry pétillant naturel from this beautiful fruit.

The Blewitt Springs vineyard is known for a couple things. One, sandy soils on top of schist, which gives the wines minerality, but aromatics too. And two, being from old bush vines with plenty of vine age, bringing complexity, concentration and depth of flavour.

So this is a pet nat (bottle-fermented sparkling wine) made from Chenin Blanc, from one of the best vineyards going, from one of Australia's best natural wine makers. It's dry, white peach, under-ripe pear, green apple, lemon-lime citrus... need we say anymore?

Jauma ("Yaow-ma") are some of the earliest natural wines known to Australia and some of the first natural wines to ever make it to New Zealand. Winemaker James Erskine is based in South Australia where he and organic viticultural specialist Fiona Wood farm several vineyards together, often with a focus on old-vine, dry-grown bush vines. All of James's wines are organic, wild fermented, unadjusted, unfiltered, unfined (vegan) and with no added sulphites.
