Gravel Down is one of the latest additions to New Zealand's burgeoning scene of small, independent, organic, natural wine producers. Here winemaker Laurence Brand and partner Rebecca Thorne produces a variety of wines across the North Island, with the majority being made in Henderson, Auckland.
This Syrah comes from a certified organic vineyard in Gimblett Gravels, Hawke's Bay. Hand harvested, 100% kept as whole bunches, wild fermentation, gentle handling and maceration for six weeks before being pressed into aged French oak for 18 months aging. Bottled unfiltered, unfined (vegan). Just 3 barrels produced.
From Laurence: "Tasting Notes: Crushed blue fruit, plum, black cherry and white pepper on the nose. Background of sweet vanilla spice and sundried tomato. Whole bunch ferment lends phenolic structure and taught sour cherry crunch. Fleshy mid palate gives way to fine but firm tannins. Decant and enjoy with food."
