2016 Jauma Ralph’s Grenache
Ralph’s is 100% destemmed grenache fermented then aged for 12 months in neutral french puncheon. With flavour more indicative of it’s sandy site atop the Clarendon Ranges than varietal, this wine is reminiscent of Nebbiolo with balanced tension between tannin and acidity.
“It sits in a big glass with pale colour but ribald scents of rose petal, cola, potpourri, dark plum, herbs. Wafty and pretty. The palate is fine, delicate, tightly wound but also has a juiciness; it’s yin and yang of fruit, tannin and acidity. There’s chompy amaro-like sour sweetness, brisk dark fruit and licks of herbs, leather and earth in light supply. You feel supple berry goodness bustling then tobacco-like savoriness coupled to fine, dusty tannins to close. Unadorned, delicious, elegant, fine Grenache” - Mike Bennie
